DEMA Seminars Examine Dive Tourism Trends
Deep Blue Adventures, in cooperation with Dr. Alex Brylske of Ocean Education International, will present two DEMA seminars exploring current trends and “big picture” issues that will drive dive tourism in the 21stCentury. The programs, described below, will highlight content from a presentation Dr. Brylske gave at a Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) conference on sustainable tourism development entitled, “The Changing Face of Dive Tourism in the Caribbean: Forging a Sustainable Path Forward” and an online course he created recently for the Ocean First Institute called Sustainable Dive Leader.
“The global tourism industry is experiencing fundamental changes due to increased demand by consumers for sustainability and the relentless phenomenon of overtourism,” says Dr. Brylske. “And because of this, dive tourism, and what it represents, is being redefined. The result will be that those who recognize and respond to what’s happening will survive, and those who don’t, won’t. It’s just a matter of time.”
How Dive Tourism Must Adapt to the 21st Century
The demise of Blockbuster Video is a cautionary lesson for the dive industry in what happens when businesses hang on to outdated business models. This seminar will explore why a new model is required for dive tourism and what psycho-demographic market analyses suggest what that model should look like. Come learn why the North American dive industry isn't growing while other leisure industries are, why redefining dive tourism as “adventure tourism” can be a way to reverse that trend, and why values are as important as value in marketing your travel program. The seminar is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov 15, 12:00-1:00, in Room 284 of the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.
The Business Case for Sustainability: A Dive Tourism Industry Perspective
What’s all the fuss about sustainability? Well, if you want to know the answer—and its implications for your success as a dive professional—then come to this seminar. The program will explore: 1) three societal trends driving dive tourism quickly toward sustainability; 2) the important difference between dive tourism and traditional mass tourism; 3) what market analyses and socio-demographic data say about the importance of sustainability to today’s consumers; and 4) what resources exist to assist dive professionals in incorporating sustainability into their business planning and operations. The seminar is scheduled for Friday, Nov 17, 4:00-5:00, Room 284 of the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.
